Ghosts & Appalachian Literature "The Dead Shall Rise"

Monday, October 30, 2017

Library Sponsored - Open to the Public

  • Monday, October 30,  7 p.m.,  “Ghosts and Appalachian Literature: The Dead Shall Rise,” present by Melanie K. Hutsell.  Appalachia is a land uniquely haunted by the past, and the figure of the ghost in its literature often dramatizes this experience of the ever-present past in the lives of Appalachians. Ghosts also appear in oral traditions from the area, and not a few Appalachian writers have been influenced and inspired by the region’s lore. Melanie K. Hutsell will discuss her debut novel in this context, sharing how family stories, an interest in folklore, and her experience of her Appalachian heritage led her to write The Dead Shall Rise. From Celtic Cat Publishing, an award-winning Knoxville publisher founded in 1995, the novel is set in the fictional mountain village of Beulah Creek, whose ordinary inhabitants are unsettled by the arrival of a stranger woman, seeking shelter from a mysterious past, who moves into the town’s haunted house.  This program will be held in the Sharon Lawson Room.
