TENNESSEE LIBRARY FOR THE BLIND AND PHYSICALLY HANDICAPPED
SERVICES FOR THE DISABLED PROVIDED AT OUR LIBRARY
Reserve Books
Patrons can reserve any circulating item which is listed on the computer data
base by filling out a reserve request at the circulation desk. The Reserve
Charge is $.50 per book, payable at the time of the request. Patrons will
be notified by phone when the book is available.
Interlibrary Loans
The Library has a limited ability to borrow for its patrons books which are not
available in our local collection. The only cost to the patron for this
service is return postage for the item borrowed. Interlibrary loan
requests are available at the reference desks.
Tennessee Library for
the Blind and Physically Handicapped
The Library for the
Blind and Physically Handicapped, (graphic link) a unit of the Tennessee State Library and
Archives, Department of State, offers FREE public library service to those
unable to hold, read, or turn the pages of ordinary books and magazines due to
physical or visual impairment. Special library materials are provided by
the Library of Congress, and FREE mailing privileges for these materials is
provided through the U.S. Post Office. Applications for this service can
be obtained at the Library reference desk.

The Library owns several videos from Descriptive Video Service which overlays
the action and dialogue of films with ongoing descriptive annotations.
Although limited in number, this collection has proven very popular with our
visually impaired patrons who also enjoy our extensive audio book collection.
We have two "Mart Cart" Scooters for patrons who have difficulty walking.
The scooter keys are available at the circulation check-out desk. MAGic is
a computer program which magnifies what is on the computer screen and the JAWS
program will read it aloud. VERA scans printed material and turns it into
the spoken word. Headsets are available for use with these programs.
Health Resource Center
Everything you need to know about health, wellness, medications, disease, and
other medical topics is available at your fingertips at the Blount County Public
Library/Blount Memorial Hospital Health Information Center at

link). A
computer is also available in the reference area to access this information.
Entrepreneur Institute
Helping small businesses be successful in Blount County, the
Entrepreneur Institute (graphic link) is a website which provides a keyword search engine
for small business start-up and includes resources for growth, resources for
getting out of business, links to all-around good sites, related topical
information, and an e-mail connection for free business advice, "Ask Teri," by
Teri Brahams, Director of the Tennessee Small Business Development Center
serving Blount County and Knoxville.
Public Access Computers:
The Library has 27 public access computers in the Reference Department and 6
in the Children's Department. The computers are equipped with Microsoft
Office and Internet Explorer. The Children's computers have various games
available. In order to use the computers, patrons must sign up at the
Reference Desk (or Children's Circulation desk for children's computers).
Blount County residents are required to present their library cards "in good
standing" when requesting time on the computer. Non-Blount County
residents may use the computer terminals by paying a fee of $2 per visit or by
purchasing an annual non-resident library card.
